Utilitas expands Jõgeva district heating plant

Utilitas opened an extension of energy production in Jõgeva, which will increase the security of supply of district heating, improve the flexibility and efficiency of energy production, and reduce the use of natural gas.

The district heating solution for the city of Jõgeva is based on a local woodchip-fired boiler plant, complemented by newly added air-to-water heat pumps and a heat storage unit. A solar park located next to the plant produces electricity. Together, these technologies enable more flexible production management and allow imported natural gas to be used only as a reserve fuel.

“For Utilitas, as a provider of vital services, security of supply is one of the highest priorities. This means both secure fuel supplies and modern, reliable production solutions. The investments made in Jõgeva meet all these goals. A more environmentally friendly production solution ensures reliable service even in more challenging conditions and provides customers with heating at a stable price,” described Priit Koit, CEO of the Utilitas Group.

Air-to-water heat pumps and heat storage added to the district heating system will allow to produce heat in the most efficient way throughout the year. A modern district heating system that combines multiple technologies is reliable and cost-effective both during peak demand and periods of lower consumption.

The 30-metre-high and 12-metre-diameter heat storage facility can hold 3000 cubic meters of water and 150 MWh of heat. The storage unit itself does not produce heat, it can be stored there as hot water and used at the necessary moment.

Total cost of the investment is nearly 2.5 million euros, including the Environmental Investment Centre’s grant of 0.7 million euros for the construction of a storage device and a heat pump plant. The heat pump plant was built by FILTER Solutions and the heat storage facility by CIEST Metal.

An important part of ensuring security of supply is also a functioning district heating network. By the end of this year, Utilitas will have reconstructed nearly 90% of Jõgeva’s district heating network, including the entire main pipeline.
