At the TOP 100 awards gala of Estonian biggest business news portal Äripäev, which took place on 21 November, Utilitas, the largest renewable energy producer in Estonia, was awarded the title of Green Company of the Year.
The award, which was presented in cooperation between Äripäev and the Green Tiger, NGO dedicated on balanced economy, is designed to recognise the companies that have excelled in environmental issues the most over the past year and inspired by reducing their environmental footprint.
Utilitas has reduced its carbon footprint by nearly 70% since 2008 and set a goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030 at the latest. As more than 70% of the world’s CO2 emissions come from cities, reducing the urban energy footprint has the greatest impact and the environmentally friendly district heating offered by Utilitas plays an important role in this.
In addition, Utilitas is contributing to the construction of new wind and solar parks in the region and is implementing a pilot project on green hydrogen. In 2023, Utilitas opened its first wind farm in Estonia in Saarde Parish, built the largest solar park in the city at the Väo energy complex in Tallinn and a heat pump plant that will further increase the efficiency of cogeneration plants. Thanks to the investments made in Väo alone, 30,000 tons less CO2 emissions per year will not be emitted into the air.
