In the third quarter, Utilitas produced a total of 243 GWh of energy, which is 25 per cent more than a year earlier. Of all energy, 94% was produced from renewable sources, 62% was heat and 38% electricity.
Due to the addition of several new customers, the sales of district cooling almost tripled in a year to 4.7 GWh. This summer, for example, the Arter Quarter, the Golden Gate and the newly renovated National Library of Estonia consumed district cooling for the first year. During the autumn, several more buildings in the centre of Tallinn will be connected to the district cooling network.
“In Tallinn, Utilitas has been developing the district cooling network since 2019, and to date, more than 20 MW of buildings have joined the network in the city centre and the Ülemiste area, most of which are commercial buildings, but there is also an increasing interest in residential developments. It is a pleasure to note that many new buildings in the capital are already being designed with efficient district heating and district cooling solutions in mind,” explained Priit Koit, CEO of the Utilitas.
In the field of district heating, Utilitas will continue to invest in new production units as well as in the network. Heat pumps were added to the Jõgeva boiler house and a heat storage unit is being erected, the district heating systems of the cities of Valga and Valka are now interconnected, a heat storage unit has just been completed in the Väo energy complex in Tallinn, and the construction of a wastewater and seawater heat pump plant is underway in Paljassaare.
At the end of the summer, a green hydrogen production unit started operating in Utilitas’ Väo energy complex and a hydrogen filling station was built. The hydrogen produced at the Väo energy complex has been issued a green hydrogen (RFNBO) certificate.
Utilitas Wind continues the construction of the 124 MW Telšiai wind farm in Lithuania. Out of a total of 20 wind turbines, 18 have already been erected. The wind farm will be completed in 2026 and will be operated by Latvenergo.
