In January, the district governments of Haabersti, Lasnamäe, and Kristiine, in cooperation with Utilitas and SLG Energy, are collecting and recycling old Christmas trees from residents to produce green energy for heating and electricity.
In January, residents of Tallinn can freely provide their old Christmas trees to create new value.
“Utilitas burns the wood chips made of the old Christmas trees and the efficiency of such biomass in cogeneration plants is very high, almost twice as much as a conventional wood-burning stove,” said Olga Petrova, Head of marketing and communications at Utilitas.
The district governments emphasize that trees must be free of any decorations, and no other waste may be brought to the collection points for Christmas trees.
In the Haabersti district, Christmas trees can be taken to collection points until January 20th at: Räime 52 (the first parking lot on Kakumäe beach coming from the direction of the city); Järveotsa tee 15a (behind building 1b); behind the Astangu 68 building; in the corner of the parking lot Õismäe tee 110a; at the playground of Õismäe tee 22a; the site at Mustjõe 40; and at the information board at Piibelehe street.
In the Kristiine district, Christmas trees can be taken to collection points until the end of January at: Kuldnoka 12a; Tedre 81a, 77a; Kirsi 8a (behind the building Kirsi 6); Välja 8; Endla 49b; Vindi 18b (courtyard); Kotka 14a; Seebi 34; Alajaama 1; Energia 6c; and at the corner of Maasika and Vaarika streets.
In the Lasnamäe district, Christmas trees can be taken to collection points until the end of January at: The corner of Majaka and Lasnamäe streets (the green area in front of the lighthouse); the green area in front of Pae 48a; the green area at Võru 16; the green area behind Vikerlase 13; in Katleri residential area the green area between the Grossi store and the school stadium; the green area in front of Mahtra 9; the green area between Raadiku 4 and 8; the green area between the Ümera Maxima store and the Grossi store; the green area in front of Kalevipoja 10; the green area at Võidujooksu 8; and the green area at Ussimäe 2a.
The campaign helps to keep urban spaces clean by preventing the accumulation of old Christmas trees in courtyards or next to waste bins.
The Christmas trees are taken away by SLG Energy, which chops them into wood chips that go to Utilitas for the production of green energy.
