Green energy accounted for 91% of Utilitas’ production in the second quarter

In the second quarter of 2025, companies of Utilitas energy group in Estonia and Latvia produced 452 GWh of energy, which is 6% more than in the same period last year. 91% of the total production was green energy. Of the energy produced, 315 GWh was heat and 137 GWh electricity.

During spring and summer period, Utilitas’ district heating companies are always engaged in the maintenance and renovation of existing infrastructure as well as the construction of new facilities. Thus, in the second quarter, reconstruction of the district heating network began in the network areas of Utilitas. In addition, construction work related to energy production was started in several cities in the spring, the aim of which is to make the production of heat and its transmission to customers even more efficient and environmentally friendly.

For example, Utilitas will connect the district heating systems of Valga and Valka, i.e. Estonia and Latvia. The capacity of the biomass-fired cogeneration plant in Valka is higher than the heat consumption of Valka network area, and its connection to the district heating network of Valga provides an opportunity to supply heat to the district heating systems of the twin city more flexibly and avoid the use of peak boilers running on fossil fuels. The biomass-fired boiler plant in Valga will also continue production.

In Jõgeva, Utilitas is adding a heat pump and heat storage facility to the wood chip boiler house, which will enable to reduce the use of imported natural gas to a minimum and also improve the security of supply. The heat pump will be completed in August this year and storage in January 2026.

In May, construction of Paljassaare wastewater and seawater heat pump plant began in Tallinn, which will provide emission-free heat to Tallinn’s district heating network starting from the autumn-winter period of 2026. In June, the capital’s first heat storage facility was also filled with water, which will start supporting the district heating system of Tallinn and Maardu from the Väo energy complex already in October this year.

“All these investments demonstrate our commitment to developing a future-proof district heating system. We are constantly looking for new ways to renew production and the network in a way that reduces the use of imported fossil fuels, increases security of supply and maintains an affordable service price for customers. All these projects meet these goals and take us forward on this journey,” described Priit Koit, CEO of the Utilitas Group.

In Estonia and Latvia, the production of electricity produced from renewable sources, i.e. wind, solar and biomass, increased by 8% year-on-year in the second quarter. In Lithuania, Utilitas Wind is building the 124 MW Telšiai wind farm, where the first wind turbines have already been erected. The wind farm will be completed in 2026 and will be operated by Latvenergo.
